Here’s an App that tells you about the ingredients in your personal care products

When you read the list of ingredients on your favorite shampoo, can you actually tell which chemical is cancerous or not? Can you pinpoint which chemical is toxic?

Many of us are clueless on the nature of the chemical ingredients in the products that we use everyday. Our toothpaste, mouthwash, soap, facial cleanser, shaving gel/cream, body wash, exfoliating wash, shampoo, facial toner, and even our make up products may be laden with dangerous chemicals that could affect our health or increase the population’s risk of acquiring cancer.

“Petroleum-based ingredients (i.e. Propylene glycol, PEGs, isopropyl alcohol) pose risks of cancer, genetic damage and reproductive toxicity including infertility to unsuspecting consumers and their infants and children,” Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, chairman of the cnacer prevention coalition warned.

Human Nature, the social enterprise company that considers themselves as ‘pro-poor’, ‘pro-Philippines’, and ‘pro-environment’ developed a social media application that helps consumers to identify whether a product contains harmful ingredients.

The company encourages consumers to always Read the Label to know whether they are safe from toxic ingredients.

“The Read the Label app is a handy-dictionary type tool developed to educate consumers about greener options while shopping for their cosmetics and personal care products. It instantly shows if an ingredient found on the product label is safe to use and gives you links to more information on the ingredient,” the description in the iTunes app store said.

It can be downloaded for FREE.

Dylan Wilk also shared how Mineral Oil has not been assessed thoroughly by international authorities. Yet, the chemical is present in many lifestyle products even in baby products.

“Mineral oil coasts skin like plastic and clogs pores slows down skin function and cell development and speeds up ageing,” the Human Nature research said.

Also, DEET, a chemical present in insect repellent lotions has been found to promote degenerative diseases and congenital diseases.
