AVON celebrates its 125th anniversary with 125,000 kisses

I’m sure many of us grew up seeing an AVON product in the house.

I remember enjoying the lovely scent of ‘sweet honesty’ when I was in my early teens and sprinkling the body powder ‘Imari’ all over my body just before I go to school. I was already in my 20’s when I realized that the scent was overpowering for a teenage girl like me. ^-^

Avon was founded by David H. Mc Connell at a time when women entrepreneurs were practically uncommon. Mc Connell dubbed his company as the ‘company for women’ recognizing the ability of women to manage their own business.

This year, the company celebrates its 125th anniversary with AVON Philippines aiming to gather ‘125,000 kisses’ to help women suffering from breast cancer.

In its press conference, Avon asked the women from the media to leave their kiss marks on a piece of paper after selecting a shade from the Simply Pretty collection. Of course, we got to take home the pretty lipstick that we chose from the tempting row of pink lippies.

If you wish to leave your kiss marks too, you may donate P50 in selected AVON branches and you will receive a Kiss card that signifies your support to this endeavor.

A total of 125,000 kiss marks will be made into a giant pink ribbon that will be displayed in a huge tarpaulin at the SM Mall of Asia in time for the 5K and 10K walk and run activities on October 2, 2011.

To join the walk, you simply need to purchase the 2011 Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer T-shirt that comes with a bag tag for P220. For every purchase, P20 will be donated to Philippine General Hospital Breast care center and selected provincial hospitals.

The registration fees for the fun run are P500 and P650 for the 5K and 10 events respectively.

TV host and actress Rhian Ramos shared how she and her family were filled with anxiety upon learning that her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Good thing though, the cancer was caught in its early stage and her mother is now cancer-free. Rhian said she and her sisters vowed to make regular visits to doctors to avoid contracting breast cancer.

Doctors say a woman’s risk for breast cancer doubles if a first degree relative – a mother, sister or daughter develops breast cancer. Other risk factors include early menarche (first menstrual bleeding), and/or late menopause, those who never had children, and those whose first pregnancy occurred after age 30 years (higher risk).
